We all want to be great at what we do and get the results for our greatness. Oftentimes, this does not seem to come so easily. While reflecting on how 2022 has panned out for me, I suddenly realized that whilst I was beating myself up earlier in the year for not seeing great results in my work, I didn’t know that it was all piling up to be delivered back to me in folds. Just before the end of the year, I was contacted by a former colleague that we had kept in touch over the course of time who introduced me to new opportunities and helped me to maximize some resources that I could leverage for corporate partnership.
Few weeks later, one of my networking communities shared opportunities for coaches which I entered for and got a sizable share of the opportunity. Just about a month before then, our organization’s compliance rating got a very high boost, which had been a huge deal in the list of things we wanted to get sorted.
As events came unfolding themselves in the most thrilling ways, I couldn’t but pause to wonder what could have happened if I had quit at any point when things were not going easy for me or if I had settled for less and not given my all?
So, what lessons did I learn about achieving greatness at work?
Never give up - You may have been looking up for a promotion, increase in your income, greater recognition or any feel good factor that makes us feel better with ourselves and much more appreciated and valued, but yet, nothing to hand. Do not despair because it will only come when you persist. I realized that we can only add momentum to what we do, when we are consistent and enduring. The results you get today are the outcome of what you did yesterday and only if you continue to put in your best efforts can you achieve the greatness you truly crave.
Thrive in your discomfort zone - Do not be afraid to take risks and be sure to expand your reach. When you begin to do things that throw you on the edge and you have the patience and consistency to learn the ropes, soon, you’ll begin to thrive in what first seemed uncomfortable to you. For example, you can offer to take up tasks you are not an expert in, so that you can challenge yourself in doing something new. That you will learn new things, open up new opportunities and greater awareness for you. You may even get a promotion from that.
Re-validate yourself - Many times, people will have their opinion about you and when you take every opinion uttered by others about you to heart, you will not achieve anything tangible. Whether the opinion about you is positive or negative, do not make that a yardstick to measure how far you should go or not go. Take from the negative opinion and check in to see what you can correct. Take from the positive opinion and see what you can do more of or improve upon. Find a way to convince yourself of your values and what you stand for. Set clear goals and go for them. There is no one in your way, than you. When something is not working well, re-engineer it and find ways to break through. Only validate your actions on how close you are to the goals and vision that you have for yourself. No one else can tread your path better than you because your path can only fit your footprints.
