Life has a way of teaching us the most profound lessons when we least expect it. Fourteen years ago, I was navigating the demanding waters of corporate life as an operations lead. The leadership in my organization was far from inspiring—often appalling, to be precise. Little did I know then that these challenging circumstances would ignite my passion for ethical leadership and ultimately shape my career as a leadership and career coach.
The Breaking Point
It all started with the arrival of a new senior manager in our team. As part of my role, I was tasked with inducting him into our systems, introducing him to stakeholders, and helping him settle into his new position. This was an irony not lost on me, as he was hired as my senior leader. Despite his title, I found myself shouldering not only my responsibilities but his as well. My days extended into nights, and the boundary between work and personal life blurred to the point of non-existence.
The mounting pressure led to a devastating consequence—I collapsed at work from sheer burnout and was hospitalized. The stress and overwork had taken a toll on my health, forcing me to take a month off to recover. It was a harrowing experience, but it also became a pivotal moment in my life.
Finding My Voice
Upon my return to work, I knew something had to change. I mustered the courage to approach the CEO and candidly explained my ordeal. I articulated that the workload was unsustainable and that doing the job of two people while being compensated for one was not only unfair but also detrimental to my well-being. This conversation marked a turning point. The CEO, perhaps taken aback by my frankness, informed me of a vacant senior position and encouraged me to apply.
This opportunity was a direct result of my willingness to speak up for myself—a lesson I carry with me to this day. I secured the promotion, and with it, a new realm of possibilities opened up within the organization.
Turning Pain into Purpose
My experiences in the corporate world, coupled with my subsequent training as a leadership coach, have fuelled my mission to empower others—especially women over 40—who struggle to get seen, recognized, and promoted in their careers. I've transformed my pain into purpose, using my journey to guide others in finding their voice and claiming their worth in the workplace.
