My path in business and leadership has been far from straightforward. As a young radio broadcaster, I found my voice behind the microphone, effortlessly captivating audiences with my words. However, outside the studio, I became timid, nervous, and almost voiceless. This shyness prevented me from seizing the many opportunities that came my way in broadcasting.
Years later, a transformational experience with a life coach changed the trajectory of my life. Through several months of coaching, I began to see myself differently. I realized that my inclination to play small was deeply rooted in societal conditioning and the desire to be a 'good girl.' This realization was the first step towards breaking free from the shackles of shyness.
As I gained confidence and learned to assert myself, I embarked on a journey of leadership and empowerment. I led teams in various organizations, trained as a leadership coach, and volunteered with projects aimed at coaching women in leadership positions in the third sector. In 2014, I established my coaching practice, helping hundreds of women in senior managerial positions advance their careers and significantly contribute to their organizations. Later, I founded a social care business and a management consultancy firm, advocating for ethical leadership, inclusive culture, and the growth of team members.
From my experience, female leaders must embrace deliberate strategies and personal accountability to lead with confidence and earn respect. Here are the skills that have been essential on my journey.
Embrace Your Authentic Self: Authenticity breeds confidence. Embrace your unique strengths and perspectives and let them shine through in your leadership style.
Invest in Personal Development: Seek coaching or mentorship to overcome self-doubt and build confidence. Personal development is a continuous journey, and professional guidance can provide valuable insights and support.
Challenge Societal Norms: Recognize and challenge the societal norms that encourage women to play small. Assert your presence and capabilities in every professional setting.
Practice Effective Communication: Develop strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Maintain eye contact, use a firm and clear tone, and articulate your ideas confidently.
Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with supportive peers, mentors, and advocates who encourage your growth and champion your achievements.
Take Calculated Risks: Embrace opportunities for growth, even if they come with a degree of risk. Taking calculated risks can lead to significant personal and professional development.
Assert Your Boundaries: Learn to say no and set boundaries to protect your time and energy. Respect for yourself translates into respect from others.
Lead by Example: Demonstrate ethical leadership by promoting an inclusive culture and supporting the growth and excellence of your team members.
Celebrate Your Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. This practice reinforces a positive self-image and boosts confidence.
Seek Feedback and Adapt: Constructive feedback is essential for growth. Seek it regularly and use it to improve and adapt your leadership style.
Mentor and Empower Others: Share your knowledge and experience by mentoring other women. Empowering others not only reinforces your own confidence but also creates a ripple effect of positive change.
Stay Resilient: Challenges and setbacks are part of the journey. Maintain resilience by staying focused on your goals and learning from every experience.
